Juanita Laverne (Dortch) Nickens

Juanita Laverne (Dortch) Nickens, 85, of Covington, Georgia, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, March 9th, 2025. She was born in Toccoa, Georgia, to Thomas and Lizzie Mae (Porter) Dortch. Juanita was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and a dear friend to many. Known for her keen sense of style, she was a fashionista until the very end. Juanita had a zest for life and enjoyed dancing, traveling—especially to the beach—and cherishing every moment with those she loved. Her organization and unwavering faith in Jehovah-God were integral parts of her character, guiding her through life with grace and strength. Her deep love for children was demonstrated through her remarkable 25-year career as a dedicated school teacher in the DeKalb County School System. Juanita’s influence reached countless students, and she was always eager to make a difference in their lives. One of the greatest joys of Juanita’s life was her grandson, with whom she shared a special bond. She was thrilled to dance at his graduation party, celebrated his milestones, including the excitement of him getting his first car, and was actively involved in his life. Her love for him knew no bounds, and she cherished every moment they spent together. Juanita’s heart also belonged to her children and their spouses, who she loved dearly. Her family was the center of her world, and she will be remembered for her loving and caring nature. She was preceded in death by parents, Thomas and Lizzie Mae Dortch; and her beloved husband, James Nickens, brothers; John Dortch, Richard Dortch, Thomas Dortch Jr. and sister Carolyn Kesler. Juanita’s legacy of love, faith, and devotion will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched. Her memories will forever be cherished by her son and daughter-in-law Terence and Kenyona Nickens, daughter and son-in-law Tiare and Melvin Fuller, daughter and son-in-law Andreen and Antonio Howard, son and daughter-in-law Torin and Xiomara Nickens; beloved grandson Terence Bryce Nickens; sister Marie Lucas; a host of nieces, nephew, cousins and other loving family and friends.
