Ms. Joan Edwards Smith

Joan Edwards Smith age 83 of Covington passed away on 0ctober 15th, 2014. She was preceded in death by her parents DJ and Ela Edwards of Watkisnville, Ga. and brothers, Eugene Edwards and Virgil Edwards. She is survived by her children, son Phil (Regina) Smith of Mims, Florida, daughters Bonnie L Smith and Becky Smith Chapman both of Covington, her 4 beloved grand children Matthew (Caroline) Chapman of Sarasota, Florida, Kelley (Vini) Bessa of Maui, Hawaii, Ross Smith of Mims, Florida and Wes Smith of Conyers, Ga. And her 3 precious great grandchildren Eli,Joe and Zoey Smith. Joan (Mema) dearly loved her children, grand children and great grand children and will be greatly missed. Joan was born in Oconee County on May 19 1931 but spent most of her adult life in Covington. She attended and played basketball for Covington High School where she was voted an All State Basketball player her senior year. She was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Covington where she sang in the church choir for many years. Joan was employed for 26 years with the Newton County Board of Education in the human resources department and was also a published poet using her talent to write poetry for several local organizations, friends and family members. She was a very devoted member of the American Legion Post 32 Auxiliary serving in many capacities including President and Historian and was given many awards including National American Auxiliary Member of the Year. She sang at many American Legion local, state and national functions and was the Choir director of the Post 32 "Choir". "Granny Smith" also served as Choir Director for the Boys State Choir for several years. She loved her country, her family and her friends. A memorial service will be held on October 25th, 2014 at The American Legion Post 32 building located at 3132 Legion Dr. SE, Covington, GA, 30014 from 2pm to 4pm. In lieu of flowers those desiring may make contributions in her memory to the American Legion Georgia Boys State organization at: The American Legion Department of Georgia 3035, Boys State 3035 Mt. Zion Rd. Stockbridge, GA. 30281.
